The coke ovens are on the bank of the Gila river, east of phoenix, off the US 60 on the way to Superior, AZ.
Where we put it is approx mile marker 220 (this is a guess), Just pass the railroad crossing on the right side of the highway. Its the first gate past the railroad crossing. This entrance is usually referred to as the "first flag pole". That's because there is a flagpole at this gate for the purposes of warning OHV's when the National Guard is out there blowing things up.
From this entrance it is 23 miles to the coke ovens. We have had two motorcycles 250 cc's with stock tanks make this round trip from this point with no problems. However, we have also had one 250cc run out of gas about 3 miles from the trucks. So if you go and you have a two stroke without a desert tank, please be advised it is a close call.
Also, what we are calling the north route is NOT for beginners or small children. It took us 3 trips to finally make this route. We would consider this route to be for CONFIDENT intermediate riders. Most of the route is easy, once you turn on to the "jeep trail" that's when the hard stuff starts. I think who ever named it the "jeep trail" must have gotten it confused with the "goat trail". Its tough
